Ireland’s National Road Safety and Environmental Protection Agency’s primary goal is to improve road safety and environmental protection by reducing harmful vehicle emissions. This test must be passed every two years and is applicable to all four vehicles in the fleet. Every year after a car has reached the age of ten years, the law mandates that it pass the NCT test in order to maintain its registration.
A severe offence now exists when one drives a car without a “valid” National Certificate of Training (NCT). Additionally to the fine, it carries three penalty points, which may have an impact on your insurance premium because insurance surcharges are typically applied once a driver accumulates 5 points on their license.
A high fail rate (approximately half of vehicles pass the first test – Source NCTS.ie) means drivers must maximize their chances of passing the test first and saving both time and resources.
The pre-NCT examination is provided at no cost
In order to assist you in identifying items that we believe will be raised by the NCT centre when your vehicle is presented for the test, McCann Motors, Ireland’s leading independent motor maintenance company, offers a Free Pre NCT check on your car.
Even after reviewing the vehicle, we cannot guarantee that you will pass the NCT test at any point because the equipment used by ourselves and test centres vary. Nonetheless, we can provide you with an excellent indication of our findings and a solution to the issue.
Key Benefits from McCann Motors
There is absolutely NO CHARGE for the check.
It is highly recommended that you make a reservation for the check-in at any of our branches across the country before your arrival.
The comprehensive check will take approximately one hour to complete; however, please check with the local manager on the day of booking to ensure that you have all of the time you need to complete the check (items covered include Brake hoses and flex cables, lights, levels, seat belts, warning lights, steering linkages and of course tyres)
In addition to the main failure items promoted by the NCT centre, McCann Motors will inspect your vehicle for safety items not covered by the NCT (for example, brake pad/disk depth readings compared to manufacturer specifications).
In the wake of the free Pre-NCT inspection and any other work that has been completed, the customer should feel more confident in the vehicle and its ability to pass the test.
McCann Motors does not perform Emission Testing or Brake/Shock Balance as part of the Pre-NCT inspection, so customers should be aware of this. Don’t hesitate to contact your local branch or make a reservation online by clicking here.
Package for first-time NCT pass holders
After introducing the National Comprehensive Test (NCT) in 2000, the Road Safety Authority has made significant changes to the test’s complexity, which has resulted in relatively stable failure rates across a range of motor categories. As of the beginning of 2020, exactly half of all automobiles fail the test at an approved testing facility (Fail and fail dangerous). (According to NCTS. i.e., January 2020)
To improve your chances of passing the NCT the first time, select our NCT first-time pass package, which applies to “any car” and “any time” you are required to take the NCT test.
NCT First Time Pass Package includes the following services: a Basic service, headlight alignment, and a series of checks for the most common NCT problems.
